The brand Hoyo de Monterrey was registered in Cuba in 1865 by the Spanish D. Jose Gener, one of the great barons of the industry of tobaco, that acquired its fortune with the Cuban Cigars and the sugar cane.
D. Jose Gener knew to see the ample potential of this commerce and in 1851 he convinced his uncle opened a factory in Havana.
In this factory it created a new brand, call the Exception, with which it tried to introduce itself in the American market. It was successful quickly.
Gener was a model “tabaquero�: it personally controlled all the harvest of the production and its manufacture in Cuban Cigars, acquiring great experience in the production and the pure marketing of his Habanos.
It invested the obtained benefits, in the purchase of the best farms and plantations of Vuelta Abajo, especially, in the region around San Juan and Martinez.
D. Gener acquired in 1860 the plantation of Hoyo de Monterrey; in 1867 it registered the brand Hoyo de Monterrey, with which it tried to capitalize the success of the Escepción.
In the United States and Europe, Hoyo de Monterrey considered the brand of Habanos with smoother and light cigars.
Gener began to print the initials of his more illustrious buyers in the curtains ring (vitolas) of the same cigars.
Gener obtained an absolute control of the business from 1870, maintaining it to its death in 1900. Its factory was one of the majors of Cuba, with more than fifty torcedores and one production of more than fifty million pure cigars to the year.
After their death, their heirs (inclined to the business of the sugar cane) sold the brand to a Ramon Fernandez and Fernando Palicio, co-owners of the brands Punch and Belinda.
In the decade of 1930, Hoyo de Monterrey made vitolas more prestigious of the brand.
Hoyo de Monterrey must its origin to the plantation of the same name located in San Juan and Martinez, in the heart of the region of Vuelta Abajo, in one of fertile territories of the shore of the river that crosses the locality.
The plantation is located there with the famous inscription of its forged iron door of entrance: " Hoyo de Monterrey. Jose Gener. 1860". that he indicates that Mr. Gener was cultivating of tobacco before he placed his mark in the market in 1865.
The Catalan industralist Jose Gener used for the first time the name of this Fertile valley for this tobacco mark in 1865, reason why she is one of the older Cuban marks.
